Welcome

Welcome to Askaway:

Chat live online with our expert staff and find answers to your questions.

We are an information service for British Columbians provided by public libraries from throughout the province.

The service is a live, chat-based information service that offers immediate, interactive, and knowledgeable help on-line.

Using chat, our staff provide research guidance and help with navigating the Internet, Your library's catalogue, and other online resources. If you provide an email address after the end of your session, a transcript will be delivered to your email account.

Hours

Chat live with Askaway staff Sunday through Thursday, from 10am-10 pm and Friday and Saturday 10am-5pm.

The service will be closed on regular Holidays and Library Closures.

Privacy

Askaway is an anonymous service.

Personal information stored in the United States may be accessible to authorities under the USA Patriot Act. In order to protect your personal information, the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act states that personal information may not be stored on servers located in the U.S. withoutyour authenticated permission. “Authenticated” means you would have to enter some kind of unique login and password– we felt this would be a barrier to service. Therefore, we provide this service without asking for, or collecting, any of your personal information.

Transcripts of Askaway sessions are temporarily stored on the QuestonPoint server in the United States and are only maintained for service evaluation and analysis.
Conditions of service are:

  • They can be e-mailed to the user as a record of the session and a reminder of resources consulted
  • They can be used to monitor and improve the overall quality of service
  • They can be mined for aggregated statistical data such as the number of questions received and the average length of sessions
  • They can be referred to in research papers, articles, and presentations (in which cases, any personal information inadvertently contained will be stripped from the transcripts before use)

Askaway staff may transmit electronic documents or text from proprietary databases. All copyright restrictions associated with these databases apply. In addition, certain restrictions will apply to licensed databases for non-library card holders.

As part of an Askaway session, users may be directed toward web sites on the Internet beyond their Library. These sites may have privacy policies different than those of the Library, and users are encouraged to examine those policies carefully if they have privacy concerns.

Askaway assumes no responsibility for any direct or indirect damage arising from the use of its connection to Internet services. By clicking "connect" to access the system you are consenting to the conditions outlined in this document.
